Eating Disorder & Trauma Groups

Group work is vital to recovery and personal growth. It breaks isolation and dismantles beliefs like, “I’m in this alone” or “There is something wrong with me.” Great power exists in group work; empathy, support and success stories! Each group is lead by a Master’s level counselor. Each group is 60 minutes. For those who do not live near a SHED group, you may join a group through video.

SHED groups for eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia and binge eating): These groups are lead by a Master’s level counselor who has experienced an eating disorder to ensure authentic understanding of members’ struggles. In group, we discuss how stressors or old hurts contribute to the symptom use, have individual process time and discuss topics like body image, feelings, family dynamics and coping skills. Groups are available at SHED’s office, schools, businesses or churches. These groups are flexible to meet individual needs and are on-going, so you can join at anytime!

Group participant’s testimony:
I want to make sure you know this group changed my life. I have been on a relatively healthy track since joining and have been able to pinpoint a lot of triggers and behaviors that have attributed to this disorder. I really appreciate how you honestly do care about us all.”
-Sue (Milwaukee)

SHED support groups for friends & family members: Groups are available for friends and family members. Eating disorders can create great challenges and heaviness for friends and family members. Everyone needs a safe place to express feelings and thoughts. Clearing the feelings helps lessen the pain and makes space for new insight.

SHED groups for obesity and emotional eating: SHED offers groups for those who use food to cope with day to day events and feelings such as: stress, safety, boredom, relationship issues, loneliness, abuse and change. Food is everywhere and often advertised as a means to “solve” problems. We will cover topics like trauma, feelings, coping skills, grocery shopping and meal planning. Groups are available at SHED’s office, schools, businesses or churches. This is a structured group, which means the person can join at the beginning of a new group cycle.

Trauma Group: SHED offers a group specifically to help members release old trauma patterns stuck in the body and nervous system. Specific trauma release and somatic exercises, poses and breathing techniques will be practiced. This group also incorporates process time to deal with emotions that arise during the exercises. Groups are available at SHED’s office, schools or churches.
